KARUMBA TO GILBERTS RIVER
It was a late departure from Kurumba this morning. We had a few more bits to grab from the shop, some more bits to catch up with while we had internet and wet sheets to wash.... Again.
We were going to be bush for the next leg, so we had to be organised. Plus being without reception adds another element of difficultly.
Boys were loaded in the car and waiting for mummy to come back from the shop, while they waited they watched to millions of corelleas in the trees overhead screeching and flying about. When they took flight it was breathtaking.
We were on the road again, 'goodbye Kurumba' can't the chorus from the car as we headed out on the highway. Past a giant flock of Brolgas 50+. Incredible! Another stop back in Normanton before getting back on the savannah highway.
It was a pretty non eventful drive through to Gilberts River with a single stop on the way at a town called Croydon. It has a great playground and some exercise equipment. Micah climbed to the top of the spiders web for the first time all by himself 🙌👏
We wandered through the gardens and learnt a bit about the history of the town over the different eras.
On arrival at Gilberts River, the free camp was right on the highway and already had quite a few people in it. True to our form, we didn't want to camp with the masses so mummy pointed us on the direction of a secret track she had stopped on the opposite side of the highway. JACKPOT!! It was a winner of a campground, no one else. Off the highway and overlooking the creek.
Claire and the boys took off for a ride and walk down in the creek, while daddy set up and started dinner. The boys played in the remnants of the river, a stagnant puddle that stank and had wallaby poo floating in it. It didn't stop them having so much fun, daming it, jumping over it, riding through it & throwing sand in it.
We were joined by daddy drone, the drone flown by daddy, who was back at camp, summoning us back for dinner with a note attached to the top. 😂
Dinner was delicious, complete with flower table decorations. Nowhere we'd rather be. 🌅
