Again...We woke with the mission of packing up before the rain which was forecast to hit us at 8AM. It was a no show but we were on track. We didn't have much of a plan today except to head closer to the Margret River region.
At Judd's request we stopped off before we left Albany at the Brig Amity, a replica of the ship that settled in Albany with the first convicts. The boys just thought it was cool because they thought it looked like a pirate ship. It turned out to be a really interesting and informative morning. Learning about the conditions and circumstances by which Albany was settled and the 6 week journey it took those 61 men over 200 years ago.
There was an entire museum located right near the ship. We enjoyed the hands on displays and immersing ourselves in what life would have been like in Australia for the early settlers, including a one teacher classroom. We had been given some advise to check out the Boston Brewing company on the way towards Denmark. So we dropped in over lunch and shared the ribs and a meat lovers pizza. Yum.
Then some hide and seek in the autumnal draped vineyard
Then we carried on to the Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks. Where Clint decided he did want to get in for a dip, but didn't have any goggles so couldn't see anything. Judd and Marty both agreed the Elephant Rocks didn't look like elephants at all, but instead should be called mermaid rocks.
We had also been told about the toffee factory called the good food company which also makes is own cider, ice cream and relishes. We were finding that this whole region was a tourist haven there was so much to do we could pull off every few kilometres. So we stopped and all had homemade ice creams and toffee. There was a great playground so we stayed a little longer.
We headed for Draftys, a campsite near Pemberton, but again we only got 10 mins down the road when we came across the sign for the Valley of the Giants, something we missed out on doing when we were in the region 10 years ago because of high winds, so we made a detour. It was more amazing than we had imagined the tall trees were colossal but it was the perspective that gave the enormity being perched up amongst these giants.
We all got a bit of a shock when the valley fell away from the walk way and we were suddenly 40m above ground, Judd especially, who was convinced we were all going to die, poor kid. But we didn't and we made it safely back to solid ground.
We then went for a walk around the Ancient Empire walk to see the ground from which these giants sprung up.
