AUBURN TO LAKE GILLES
We packed our Auburn camp up and set off for another day of travel, we aimed to get to Lake Gilles as we didn't want to stay in Port Augusta. And this was a conservation park on a salt lake.
Our start was slow...Claire saw the bakery as we drove though Clare...and we just HAD to stop, we haven't done a country bakery yet and it's day 10!! Such a beautiful bakery, complete with grapevine & vanilla slices 😋
After finding a gas bottle replacement, which took quite some time to find the right size, we were finally on the road with a 4hr drive ahead 😬
It was a long drive! We pushed the boys though to Port Augusta, where we stocked up as this was the last major town before the Nullarbor!! Boys & daddy had late lunch & a big play at the waterfront playground (winner) while Claire did the shop. It was then back in the car for another big leg to get us through to Lake Gillies before the sunset . The real winner was the play-doh ice cream shop which lasted hours!
.... And then the fun begins... Clint had supposedly put in the coordinates for 'Lake Gilles' (not Lake Gilles conservation park campground - different).
So we were now out of internet range and turning off the highway onto the track, which at the time we thought was going to lead us to Lake Gilles campground but as we headed down the track and it got more rugged we realised we were not going to the campground!!
To avoid getting lost we decided to put up and camp in the middle of a dry salt lake!! Absolutely beautiful sunset (click for video of sunset) & quiet night except from the large running kangaroos around!
